I am going to build a treehouse/playhouse for the 3 grandsons 8, 6, and 3, on their property. I was just going to build a playhouse on stilts, a little log cabin with a veranda, but my son would also like to put up a storage shed. Is it a good idea to combine the two?

John Hey, John, first of all WELCOME - - - good to have you posting here and secondly Me and Larry the Cable Guy think that combining the two is an excellent idea - - - so "git'er done" and post up some pics when you can
however, you might want to be sure the flammables are out of reach from the kiddos

Hi John! Nuthin' wrong with combinin' the projects. Yer bound to save on some materials and time. My only caution would be the same as what Mello said...keep the dangerous stuff away from little fingers.
Might be a good idea....and then after the kiddies grow out of it, it can be converted to upstairs storage for all that ss**** that we never throw out.........

BTW...welcome to the forum......
"upstairs storage"
what a great idea. That is what we will do. thanks for all the good advice.
Now to buy the material. I want to stay way from the arsenic treat brown stuff so will go with pressure treated green for the bottom and posts and and cedar for the upstairs log cabin part. What do you think?

Yep! Seems like a good plan to me. When that treated lumber first came out it was bad stuff. I actually know a fella who lost a hand 'cause he couldn't get a splinter out. Not good. They say that it's not harmful like that now...different process and materials to preserve it.
Looks like we will start the treehouse/shed this weekend. My son wants a 10x12 shed with 7' walls. The plan is to sink 16' 4x4 corner posts for a 10 x12, hang the floor joists for the log cabin at 8' (leaveing 12" for the lower joist to take up) and have 4' sidewalls and a 6' peak on the cabin. I think the cabin itself will be 10 x10 and leave 2' for the small veranda porch at the front. I plan to hang the floor of the shed just above the ground. instead of on the ground. because there is a slight hill we will be building on, that should take care of any water run off entering the shed. Once we get the floors in we will build walls and stand them on the floor like normal construction and then remove the temporary cross braces. any suggestions? John

Sounds to me you have a Go-For-It Plan,, well thought out, and also sounds like you have experience with construction,, NOW we come to the real test,, do you have a license for all these different tasks you need to do,, like a license to dig that hole ,, operate that shovel, a license to mix and shovel in the concrete around the posts, a license to pound on that nail, [ Just kidding ya John ] check out the ceramic tile thread, under Flooring, to see what I'm referring too
By the way,,, WAY KOOL Willys and various related toys in your Avatar,,

Funny you should bring that up. Iowa past a more comprehensive craft licensing law last year and is now implementing it. Since I work in facilities maintenance in a state institution (University) I may have to carry 4 different journeyman licenses to be able to do what I have been doing for the past 25 years. Electrical, Plumbing, HVAC and Mechanical @$100-250 per year each.
So, by law I ought to be able to do anything (or at least say that I can)
Just another way for the state to make money!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You do realize that we, as..."inspectors" will require a steady influx of pictures, that we can critique at our leisure.....and that we have authority to pull said licenses at any time...............LOL

when the kidos get through with it, keep it for a hideout.a man can use one now and then.
When the kidos get through with it ,, it will more than likely be ready for the burn pile. [ in Oregon you are Required to have a permit to burn anything, ]
big fine if ya get caught.. goberment needs the money to feed the environmentalist tree huggers
funny how things work - - when we were camping at Enchanted Rock last month, I was talking to my youngest son about he business and he told me that he could see a long future, as long the the "greens" and "the tree huggers" got their way
OH, he deals in recycled plastics and etc

The "greens and tree huggers" carry a big frickin' stick here. They've got too much power and they throw it around too. I'm all for reusin' and recyclin' within reason but the enviro-twits here are well beyond what's reasonable. Good Gawd, a good, rippin' fart might just get ya a fine.
Back in the 80's when all the tree huggers and environmentalist government , had managed to put 99% of the sawmills and timber related towns out of business, some of the displaced workers ,, loaded up a huge old growth log, about 10 or 12 ft across, [ the one log completely overloaded a logging truck,] and hauled it to N, York city,, most people that were protesting the cutting of timber,, didn't realize that the paper they wipe their ass with every day comes from trees,, one woman that was at the protest rally answered the question, "where do you think tissue paper comes from"? her answer,, "the Grocery store" ?[ honest to god]
The Governor of Oregon is a real big supporter of the huggers,, was a protester in his younger days,,camped out in the trees for days ,to prevent them from cutting them,

If our Goobermental agencies had any "nads" then there should be a fair balance that would allow both groups to be happy and yet benefit from the "system" - - yeah, right? - - - but we all know who ends up paying and who ends up with the bennies, don't we

You would never believe how they control this state,, they have managed to get the growth boundary for home building squeezed down to nothing,, they got bills passed that make developers fill in all large lots with row houses, [like is in NY ] and if you have a large lot like I do,, they fly over in a airplane taking pictures and list your property to developers as being a dividable lot for possible housing .. and then the developers start bugging you to sell, They call it infilling I live in a unincorporated area of the county,, but surrounded by the city,, they can incorporate you into the city without your consent if they want too, as long as your area is surrounded by the city, which we are,,
But they tried to do that to The NIKE headquarters and got sued by Nike, and lost, so I think we are safe for a while
WOW!!! Talk about a Hijack, this is a duzzy
Ok now back to the regularly scheduled program

I thought I'd update the thread a little. We got the playhouse/shed 98% done over the long weekend. All we need yet is to hang the small door and windows. This thing has been a real pain with all of the variations it has gone thru. The first drawing led to changes first by my son and then by his wife and thirdly by the grandkids. , Whew!!!!
The last step witll be the wiring for the lights and small A/C and carpet. Then they are on their own. They still haven't decided on what color to paint it. Of course the grandsons want either black with silver stars, or brown with purple dragons. I think the daughter-in-law will win with tan and white like the house.

Thanks guys. Glad you like it!!!! So far it has attracted most of the kids in the neighborhood. We had a cookout yesterday and it was used alot. The only complaints so far are no swings or climbing rope. I guess I will have to bring a beam off the eave and add a couple of swings. And some sand too. the 3 year old flys down the slide and lands on the ground a little hard.

Does that mean as builder I am the accessory after the fact and therefore responsible for any and all injuries.!!!!!!!!
"..Please your honor I didn't know boys will be boys, honest.."
Hahaha, better hope the Judge is a Pawpaw also
You did know that a piece of wax paper like you cook with carefully placed between the hinny and the slide will greatly decrease friction and greatlly increase the decent or should I say "launch"

No need for me to pass on any more information like that.
The three year old already found the fascination of tossing his "blankie" at the ceiling fan. He stands on the top bunk and throws it at the fan blades at the fastest speed. He sure looks tempted to jump after it with the **** eating grin on his face.
The 6 year old wanted to know if he could jump off the roof the of playhouse. His dad told him that was a stupid idea. I didn't tell his dad that my brother and I used to jump off the barn roof into the cattle pen using and old gunny sack as a parachute.

Those are some lively boys! Ya know that they're healthy when they're up to stuff like that. Right on. We used to jump inside the barn. There was a big loose hay pit kinda area and we'd climb the rafters as high as we could get and Whooooooo!!!

my oldest son[ who is 40 now,,] was about 12 then] snuk out of the house one night and met up with his buddy, took a couple of 3 wheelers for a ride, and found a old corn silo . climbed up to the top of it and was looking down over the edge, and the friend fell into the silo, landing on a pile of corn, but it was about half full and chris couldn't reach him, so he ran home and got help, [at 3 am] the friend broke his ankle, and his pop whooped both of them ass real good, Chris [my son] was living with his mom at the time, but came to live with me soon after,, X said she just couldn't take anymore teenage stunts,, I had no problem with him at all, must [have been her ]

That would be a hair raisingly close call. Here in Iowa the news periodically have stories of someone who dies after falling into a half full silo and suffocating in the loose corn.
