I doubt you could get the snake past the P-trap,, the clog is most likely from a hair ball I saw one of those Billy May type deals on TV last night [not BM tho] it is a thin flexable shaft that has a brust looking end on it that has hundreds of small hook type brissles,,you feed it down the drain as far as possable, l or to the P-trap anyway,] and twist it, it catches the hair and pulls it out ,, at least it looked like it worked on tv Have you tried that liquid plummer GEL,, ? I had good luck with that,,
I have never ordered anything from one of those "info-mercials", however, for $17, I think I'm gonna try this one. May be a lesson learned and it may be the answer. No matter, I will let Y'all know what the outcome is.
Speaking of ordering online, Geeze may want to know about this Book that I'm fixing to order from Amazon for the Wiff's oldest son's Christmas. It is written by Maxine Brown of the "Three Browns" the oldtime singing group from Arkansas since most of his Kin is from there. Saw Jim Ed Brown (her brother) talking about it on "Larry's Country Diner" (RFDTV) last week and it really looks like a good'un!

Well, I dropped by Ace Hardware and except fo the larger cable snakes, they only had a very small tool made from plastic that looked like a thin saw blade with only every 6th tooth. So I pulled the tub screen (not really a screen just a chrome plate with several 1/4" holes that wouldn't stop any kind of hair other than maybe dinosaurs) I've been on this old earth over 68 years and I have never done the hairball thingie and "MAN" that is one "Yucky" "Nasty" "Filthy" "Slimey" Job. I've washed my hands at least 6 times since then and they still feel nasty and yucky.
Anyhow, I found a site on the net that gave some other things to do in addition to the hair grabbing thingie so I plunged it with my plumber's friend, I poured hot "boiling" water down it, I put baking soda and vinegar down it and I pulled out all the hair that I could reach with the new apparatus and it ?seemed? to be draining "better" - - - time will tell.
I am going to pick up some "Pequa", I think it's called, at Home Depot that one of the sites recommended for dissolving hair in the tub drain and see if that helps any.
That site recommended the vinegar and soda thing once a month and the boiling water once every six months - - - interesting, eh??
Oh, and I did cut a piece of nylon screen to go under the chrome plate until I can pick up a Bath Tub Strainer.

I have seen those blade thingies you mentioned,, did you get alot of hair out,, probably 50 years worth,,? [ dry it out and make ya a hair piece,] multi colored
I have used that liquid plumber hair dissolver, and it worked really good, just use more than they recommend, and leave it in for awhile befroe rinsing it out with HOT water
If you got all the hair out,, I would think it would drain pretty good,, unless you have a grease plug further down the line,,

Hey Mellers, I've unclogged more drain lines than I care to recollect. The surest way is to remove the tub overflow plate. If it has a lever on it than it may have the brass mechanism that plugs the drain when in the up position. This just pulls out with a little finesse.
I use what I call a pistol snake. (see pic). I've used it for over 15 years. Had to replace the coil snake part once but man has it been a good tool. around 25.00 IIRC.
Just yesterday I pulled out the nastiest clog from a shower drain I had seen in a long time, and yea you're right, rubber gloves becomes a must!!!!!!!!
I did remove the overflow plate and took a look at it but not knowing how it worked I got scared and put it back on. There was a small cotter pin that held the plate and lever together but I didn't know what was below it so I opted out.
You are right, however, I couldn't do much just thru the drain hole.
What are the chances of getting that pistol snake hung and not be able to pull it out??

Kinda slim.........unless you really wind it up all twisted in the piping. But then, of course, I've done that and you just have to yank hard to get it out. That's when you realize the clog is stuck on the end and it whacks you on it's way out...........eeeewwwww.
Just pull out the drain stopper mechanism, it's have to mess it up. Then the snake can go straight down to the p-trap where the clog most likely is. I rarely find the clog too much farther than that.

OK, another question - - - the lever mechanism that the cover plate is connected to is connected to a longer rod?? that comes up from the P-trap (I guess?) - - - if I remove the cotterpin that is holding the lever and the rod together, I assume that the rod won't drop outa sight - - right? Then am I supposed to pull the rod out thru the overflow hole??
I HATE PLUMBING - - - even worse than Roofing

Do not remove the cotter pin, there is no need to. Just pull the whole mechanism out. The part that blocks the water is called the "bucket". The p-trap is beyond this.
Really mel, it's not as complicated as it looks. I have not had a chance to watch Rat's video but I will. Running a snake through this piping is the easiest and best way to remove a clog. Oh yea, don't forget to post a pic of that big nasty when ya got it on the end of the snake..........Har...
Yea good vid Rat, But I would still run the snake through the overflow opening, I've done it this way for years........

OK, I have the confidence to do that know that I've read CHS's last post and also seen the video of Rat's. I had no clue what that bucket looked like and "IF" I could get it back in after pulling it out (cue BR's oneliner) but now I do.
Thanks Gentlemen - - - 'ppreciate it

hahaha, thanks, if it's worse than what I just drug outa the drain hole yesterday then it may very well have other stuff mixed in with it - - BTW, is the P-trap right beneath the bucket/plug/thingie??
ONE MORE QUESTION - - - - the Wiff or I only take showers (her because of her knee surgery) can I pull that out and leave it out until I get to the City and get a good affordable snake YET KEEP TAKING SHOWERS WITH IT OUT??

The drain from the tub just angles over to the bucket, the trap is down below that. You can leave it out but the overflow cover pulls the gasket on the overflow pipe tight against the tub. This won't be much of a problem for a few showers but if ya take a bath and the water is at that level it will leak behind the tub.

Cool, no problem with the water getting much deeper than an inch or two so we will be alright. We are going to the City on Friday to hangout with my Boys and then probably shop on Saturday and they have a Lowes and Home Depot there so I should be able to find a snake that will work and not have a journeyman's price tag.
Thanks again

I took a shower this morning and never looked to see how the tub drained - - - must have had Sherry's Doctor's Appt on my mind. Then while we were headed to town, I mentioned going to Home Depot or Lowes this weekend and looking for a better snake - - - she looks at me and say "Oh by the way, last night when I took my shower the tub drained real good and fast"
Can you spell "preoccupied"?????

Well, during my shower, I paid particular attention to how the water was draing while the shower was running and the tub drain works like it was brand new
I'm starting to think about my old friend's famous saying - - - "if it works then don't fix it" so I think I'll replace the bucket and wait on snaking the p-trap until I have to. It would just be my luck to break something that ain't broke.
Thanks for all the help, gang.
We are outa here in a couple hours to #1 son's for some pickin and grinnin and chowing down - - - be back tomorrow afternoon sometime.
Have a great weekend, Y'all
