Scissor truss for the max attic space

Friends wanted their Barn with a full attic space, rather than the open center truss I used. The building was plenty tall as I had already designed it, and treated poles are only so long. Most my upstairs wall could be was 5' to the top of the plate. I like to keep a roof steep (45deg.) so I had room to vault the joists, making scissor trusses. I suppose if a code guy came around I could have been forced to put in walls that would narrow the space until the "approved" height would be there. Fortunately we didn't have that nonsense to deal with. It's a neat space, could insulate and do a T&G or shiplap board inside.  The added-in peak window was a snafu that added a couple of days, that's another story.

it looks good.a useable.space.you could .next time.use a beam and rafters to support for your span and do a raised ceiling.it would be completely open to the bottom of your rafters.id use 2x8 rafters.youll get more insulation.just a thought.geezer69

Yup, that is a good space. When we bought this place the garage was more of a small barn with the "gambrel" style rafters. I had no real use for the space so the boys had the best clubhouse in the neighborhood...complete with electricity. Heh,heh...kids.

Yeah, my youngest is 16 now and way more interested in what he can do in the downstairs now. In the summers there would be a whole bunch of them up there "roughin' it". We had parents droppin' off groceries to them 'cause they practically lived there for the summer. We didn't ask them to bring stuff, but didn't turn it away either. We all know how a pack of 13-14 year old boys can put it away.

Oops..sorry for runnin' away off topic here.

The boy is a sophmore and into Base andBasket ball and want's a workout ares. I think I will junk enough stuff to get a corner space in the garage for the weights and machines he has. A hagout, I already have tunes in there, add a fridge and tube, maybe his friends will come here and less running to a gym or court. The basket ball court is lame, I should get some 4" pipe to make a real backboard support.

Oh yeah man...we've always got a yard fulla them but I know where there are and what they're doin'. Sometimes I get into whatever it is with them, you know...tossin' the football or whatever. They must appreciate it 'cause I don't have to carry trash out or groceries in or stuff like that. If they see something like that goin' on they jump on it without even being asked.
