TV Help

I think this is tech stuff...maybe not? What good, if any, tv shows do we watch for guidance/entertainment in this home repair field? I used to watch a few, but kinda lost interest. I can't stand Bob Vila...not that he doesn't know his stuff, he just gives me itchy knuckles. biggrin I get a kick (and some ideas) outta the house filippin' programs. One that I never miss, I've seen 'em all repeatedly, is Holmes On Homes on HGTV. Now that guy knows his stuff! Lotsa good advice and tips there. I'd love to have his budget, though. weirdfaceSome of my contractor "associates" hate the show...I tell 'em that they must be threatened by him. Do yer job and there'll be no problems. I know that I bend over backwards and do flips to make my customers happy...Hell, I've evn lost money on jobs to do it. Hmmm, maybe I'm just stupid and need to stop tryin' to keep my prices reasonable. weirdfaceI do want a new truck. HaHaaa!

Mike Holmes lives in the town, I just moved from....saw him around a few times. ...I know, who cares?....LOL

Anyways, watching his and a few others have helped me a lot learning about what is structural and that kind of stuff.

I think those "Flipping" shows are a big joke..........and it shows you how they cut corners to make a sleazy profit..........I don't think I would be interested in a house some of this guys/gals renovated..............Maybe it works in the US, but with taxes and stuff on investment properties, I don't think it would be so easy in Canada.

I watch some of those home flippin shows,, and yeah  I have to laugh at some of the fools that jump in with both feet and don't know squat about what they are doing,, just looking to make alot of money,, anybody that expects to completely remodel and up grade a home,[ even in decent condition]  for 30K is dreaming.. and usually end up in a night mare,

My wife watches that HGTV constantly,, I REALLY want to put a parental control on it, thats the root of all my problems with my remodel,, I just can't seem to make her understand that just because they can do it on TV doesn't mean I can do it at home,, I just nod my head and ignore her,, the best thing for Married men was the invention of hearing aids,, they can be removed. the word "HUH" is really agrivating to a womsn

I agree with you both about the flippin' shows...laughable and sleazy. They think that they're so damn smart puttin' the screws to the contractors to work for free....I have customers tryin' the same with me. Maybe they're just that type of person and would do it anyway, but some of them are completely clueless and then try to hardball me it's got to be coming from those shows. evileye
I've learned a few things from the Holmes crew, though...heard about some great products there too. That Schluter membrane that we use is one of 'em.

I think if I saw Mike Holmes strollin' down the sidewalk, I'd have ta go shake his hand, Poncho. Not in a teenaged girl star struck way.

I watch a lot of the home improvement, flipping, and decorating shows. Most are good for nothing but a laugh. I'm constantly amazed at the crazy range of prices they pay to get certain jobs done. It's always way too much or way too little. Watched a flip show the other day and the guy paid $2,200 for a completely new roof! All new plywood and shingles on a 3 bdr house. Wish I could have found that contractor last year when I needed mine done.

I'm thinking that next time I need to get bids on something I should just rent a camera crew and tell the contractors that they'll be on TV. wink

That San Antonio bunch looks to be the worst for gouging their workers. It looks like they're exploiting illegals...which is definately a topic for another place, but that's how it looks. I can't really stand watching them anymore. If ya Google their name you'll see a long list of law suits against them...from property issues to that DVD/book tutorial package. I didn't even attempt to write their name 'cause I know I'll mess it up. weirdface

Makes you wonder ............They seem like they are living the American dream....by taking full advantage of others...and flaunting it.......with the Hummer, big house, the whole bit....Probably, none of it paid for. ....Until the TV show came along and paid for it all.........Me, I'm just jealous, I guess.

Nah...not jealous. That bunch is about as obnoxious and fake as it comes. It's hard to be happy for someone's "seeming" successful when ya know they didn't earn it. Not with ethics anyway.
That punk project manager, Bart/Bret/Brent/whatever...I woulda drove him through a wall long ago. He's a big crybaby and worse than Armando...I think that's his name.
The intern kid that they brought in is a "plant"...he's actually an actor.

As far as those shows go the South Carolina bunch is better it seems. There's also a couple of newer ones...can't recall their cities but their ethics seem to be better. Not necessarily their ability, but their ethics. Another show has that lady house flippin' expert and different rookies every time. It, at least, shows that every twit with credit shouldn't jump in and try. Those foks with no ability just wreck the actual biz for the pros. I do think that the right people (ethics+ability+money) in the right town can make money in that game and turn out decent homes for people.

Yeah, the Texas bunch are really awful. I like the SC group much better but since they've done some houses in this area I know that the prices they quote for various jobs just aren't realistic. You certainly couldn't get a local contractor to work for those prices yet they expect us to believe that they brought a crew in from out of town and did it for that price. (I guess they could pull it off if TLC was picking up the tab for motels and food for everyone.)

On the show with the blonde expert I just love how a lot of people ignore her advice. That always cracks me up. biggrin

Is anyone else bothered by seeing all those kitchen cabinets torn apart by idiots with sledge hammers or is it just me? Perfectly good boxes that just need new doors or that would be useful to someone else if they'd just take a little extra time to take them down rather than smashing them to pieces.

That smashing of the cabinets etc are all part of the show.....The sponsors love that. It gets the public out buying the new stuff. Its the same thing with the car fixing shows.....They take the stuff off the car and throw it about 10 feet across the floor and into a big pile with a crash........I hate that, as I use what used stuff I can, or try and sell it to others.........

Yes...that blatant waste does not fly here in the real world. The cupboard smashin' usually gets me yellin' at the TV...very infuriating. furious

Whooo!! I just watched one of those "blatant waste" shows...I have to mention it 'cause it was the most blatant and the most wasteful and the stupidest. Man oh man, it was that "Movin' Up" program where 3 homeowners sell and move on. They bring 'em back to see and comment on te changes that the new owners made. Anyway, this couple in particular totally destroyed the kitchen cabinets (must be an epidemic) and replaced them with an almost identical set....the biggest difference was the color of the stain. I think even the hardware was very similar, if not the same. Too frickin' stupid.

I wanna find the next location and scoop the throw aways. hmm

Arrrrgh! Dammit! I'm doin' it again...watchin' Flip That House. evileye Why is it always a surprise when stuff comes up? I'm not talkin' about hidden or unforseen stuff...in this particular episode they bought the property and created a budget then "discovered" that a bunch of wiring that was on the outside of the structure (for lights) was actually interior grade. They're supposed to be pros! They even have a budget created! How is that possible? I blame the rain...yep, the rain. 'Cause if it weren't for the rain I'd be workin' on a job and not watchin' these morons. Pros my arm.

ROFL! I saw that episode too. I couldn't believe, after they saw the age of that stove, that it didn't occur to them that the electrical in the house probably hadn't been updated either. Too stupid! You'd think that a 1950's stove would have been a clue about the sort of maintanence and updating the previous homeowners had done, huh? wink

And what's up with their "investor" guy? Do ya think he's just a wee bit high strung or what? biggrin

Oh yeah he's a real dandy! I keep tellin' myself that they just put all of that nonsense on for dramatic appeal. You know...bad acting with no script or direction. Can you imagine how much of what's recorded they can't use and have to leave on the editting room floor? I mean, if that's the best of it. weirdfaceHowever, when I'm at home with nothing to do I watch it...so I guess I'm the tool.

A common thread for all of them are all of the "surprises" that any real contractor/developper/investor would never miss. Dramatic effect.

25-40 years ago, there were some decent shows. I liked This Old House, then Hometime. Both of them have went from "how to" shows to showcase the most expensive way to go shows. $5,000 counter tops???? Last one I put in was under $100. Laid it right on top of the counter top that was there. No sledgehammer work for me. There were others, but I can't remember much from that far back.

I do like Mike Holmes, but can't afford his budgets. I guess it's the concept I like, do it right, do it once. If you can't afford to go expensive and right, then do it with less expensive and right. As I mentioned, you don't NEED that $5,000 rock counter top imported from Mars. There are less expensive alternatives, and it will still be done right.

The "flipping" shows deserve to be flipped off. Both with the channel changer and the middle finger. I have yet to see one that wasn't the exact opposite of Mike Holmes. They all did it cheap, half butted, or less.

The Property Brothers seem to be ok. I often wonder though. Why can they do a remodel in 5 weeks, that This Old House takes 6 months to do? I've never paid for a total remodel, so really don't know what a realistic time frame would be.

Love It Or List It. Eh, makes one wonder. The list goes on and on.

Most come under the label "Reality Show", and if there is one thing I've ever been sure of, it's reality shows are a LONG WAY from reality. Some are entertaining, Mythbusters is labeled a reality show, and I get a kick out of them, but most would be better labeled as "STUPID".

Amigo, I tried everyway that I could to find out about him but to no avail - - - - his wife, Sandy, was a Realtor and I even tried locating them from that end but with the same results. I don't think that Trevor was the kind of guy to just disappear and never make contact again, unless something serious had happened. I do know that he really suffered with that back pain and he said that it could get unbearable at times so, I guess, we'll never know unless he or one of his family should drop back by but I'm not holding my breath after this long.  I sure hope he didn't pass on or something like that.

TV.

Our cable provider has decided to go all digital. That means the old tv's won't work. Charter will provide one box "free" for one year. If you have more tv's without boxes, tough titty.

While the new box is "free", the boxes we did have went up $1 each, every month. Surcharges were added to the bill. That's BEFORE we get the "free" box.

So essentially, we now have LESS service, but are paying MORE for it.

AAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHH

Charter, an American corporation doing what American corporations do best. Take money from the poor, and give it to the rich.
