Ceramic tile....Who done it?

Alrighty then,

I'm getting ready to do three areas of ceramic tile in my house.

The Kitchen

The Bathroom

The Main Enterance

Tile is one home improvement task I have never done, or have experience with?

Any points, tips, warnings, suggestions?

All I know is from watching Mike Holmes on TV......I think the most important thing is.......The subfloor has to be solid and tight. It's the flexing of the subfloor that causes the grout and tiles to crack. Screw it down with screws into the joists, not nails.....and lots of screws.

I've done alot of it - floors, showers, counters.

Layout is the most critical for a professional look, try not to have any cuts less than a half tile if possible.
Dry-fit until you get the best possible layout.

For floors, it's nice to get something with a textured surface (smooth will be slicker than snot when it's wet).

Try to pick a field tile that you can get matching accent tiles (bullnose and corners) which really adds to the finished look.

Lowe's and HD carry caulking that has sand like stuff in it that matches their grout perfectly.

Rent a wet tile saw (most rent-a-centers have 'em) better results than regular tile cutters.

If you are going to buy a discontinued or closeout tile, make sure you buy plenty of extra.

Good good....

Any idea about the sub floor? Whether I should put down another on top of the one that's there?

I plan on using the wire mesh, concrete (or whatever its called) quickset base, then the tile morter and tile...then the grout of course...

Thanks...

The sub floor that's there now is pretty solid and flat, I ripped up one I put in years ago (in the bathroom) when I put linoleum (sp?) down....I tore it up today because it had alot of crappy glue on it.

I plan on using the mesh and concrete as I just posted...does the subfloor need to be prefectly flat for this, (as long as it's solid) or will the floated odd concrete base be suitable?

You are talking wire mesh, and concrete,, are you planning on making a shower stall? for the floor and walls where the tile will go,, I used the tile backer board, [concrete board] and screwed that to the studs and floor,, but make sure it doesn't raise the floor up above the ajoining floor, that you will be butting up against, C/board + Tile = 1" or 3/4" according to the thickness of your tile,,  If you have a underlayment on top of your sub floor,, and you want to use the concrete board,,you need to remove the underlayment first, the C/board replaces that,, makes for a waterproof floor,,,wink

If you have a plywood subfloor they make a 1/4" thick tile backer board (Lowe's) that you can screw down over it. You don't have to tape the joints, just fill the gaps with thin set when you put down the tile.

You don't need to use the wire mesh and concrete unless you are building a sloped shower floor that will be tiled or if you are planning on installing infloor heating.

Good info so far in the above posts. I've screwed down the 1/4" hardi-backer and tiled over it with good results. Of course it went over 1 1/16" flooring plywood. It was pretty straight and true to begin with.

Some people actually nail this down.............DON"T!!!!!!!!!!! Backer is marked as to where the screws should go. Use extras where in doubt.

Once all the backer is in place, I like to place a piece of tile next to the door jambs and such and trim them up with a jamb saw. This makes for a nice professional finished look.

Oh yea, do not box in the dishwasher if you have one. Make sure it will clear the finished floor so if you replace it later, you won't have to take it out with a sawzall. I've had to remove dishwashers after folks have done this. Also R&R'D tile in front of the dishwasher. Not good!

Good luck, John

Thanks everyone...

I actually thought about the dishwasher issue today...but thanks for the heads up, I never would have thought of it had I not had to take it out last week for a minor repair....The counter top will lift easily to remove the dishwasher if I can;t find a way around the problem.

So.....I went and bought all the stuff tonight, I looked at the tile backer board and thought about it, but I had a friend who has done this a few times with me, and he had always used the mesh and concrete method...so that's what I ended up buyingconfused  I think I'll roll with that since his kitchen and bathroom turned out great, and has lasted well to this point.

I'll keep checking back for more tips, everything is helpfull and I appreciate ever bit!

Cheers guys.

Installing Ceramic tile SUCKS.

especially when you do a room...come back the next day...and half the tiles are loose....

THEN, you realize you are using the WRONG mortor to stick 'um down with.....

Looking good now though....

I'll forget about this bad experience in about a month...and offer to do it for a friend for free I'm sure.....'cause that's the way I roll.....

I've finger printed a few tiles in my life...I hate it. have you ever used that Schluter underlayment called Ditra? I mentioned in another thread their product called Kerdi...the waterproofing membrane for showers. That Ditra is incredible! They guarantee that your thinset will not lift or crack because of the mechanical bond. It's easy to use too...you roll the material out, trowel the thinset into the dimples and it's their shape that holds it in place. They're wider at the bottom so once the mortar sets it's in there...a done deal. Pretty cool. If you've ever watched Holmes On Homes install a tile floor you've seen him use it...orange stuff in a roll.

That looks good! I really like that tile too...for my work I "steal" color and pattern ideas from actual tile to simulate with the concrete. I really like that look and I hope to "steal" it too. Heh,heh.

hmm Yer vid could not be shown in "my region" Rat confuse I think that I saw it before though.

So the License Guy wasn't one of you guys pullin' a prank? blankstare The "house burnin'" statement kinda made me think that  it wasn't. Dammit, that woulda been a great gag though. aww  Too bad. It wasn't an insult that I thought it was one of you fellas, it was really a compliment for a great gag.   worship.gif

So if this fella is for real it's gotta be some teenage punk who knows nuthin'. As a prank it was funny but as "for real" it's pathetic.  disbelief Must just be someone spoilin' for a scrap. I don't know what licenses are available and required stateside but we don't have licenses for tile setting. There's a flooring course at some community colleges and tile setting is somewhat "apprenticeable" but there's no license. There's business licenses of course...I don't know where this fella is comin' from, figuratively or literally. aww

EDIT>>Scan yer "license" and post it here big boy. I would truly love to see one of those special documents. Show me that I'm "stuppid"  rofl.gif

can certainly vouch for this statement,,, You got me through a lot of problem areas that I would have had to hire a professional to do.. and believe me I really appreciate it,, it still shuts down once in a while if the temp warms up much, states that the supply is too fast,,  but all I have to do is turn it off and do the manual reset,,and alls good.... but usually it goes to standby,, but SCAN THAT LICENSE, ,,,,,[ J/kiddin]

Yep, heating and boilers, electricians, gas technicians...those folks are licensed here too. Framers, roofing and siding, gutter installers and tilers are not licensed. They may have certificates, diplomas from trade schools and/or apprenticeships...they may have business licenses...but an actual license that qualifies them by testing from a regulated set of standards? Nope! wink Building permits aren't even required here to install, remove or replace floor coverings...with the exception of those containing asbestos. aww The Construction Safety Council puts on training courses for various aspects of job site safety such as WHMIS, Confined Space and Use Of Scaffolding...a certificate is given for a passing grade in the testing. These certificates are required on more and more job sites to the point where if you don't have at least some form of endorsement from the Council you will be able to work on very small, private, non-permitted projects only. One last comment on the licenses...we don't need one to dig a ditch here either. biggrin

When this license topic came up I really did think that it was one of our resident pranksters havin' some late April Fool's fun. It woulda been a fantastic gag and I almost wish that I had thought of it. biggrin To realize that it was meant in seriousness and was a flamin' shot aimed at my buds and me it ticked me off. evileye That's why I'm scoffing at the Tile Setter's License  nana.gif...I've never heard of such a thing. Rat, I hope that you're kiddin' with the "that hurt" statement (or it was directed to the License Guy) 'cause when I thought this was a prank, I thought it was brilliant and I thought it was you...a compliment to your sense of humor.  worship.gif

O.K. Guys,, I'll fess up,, when I made my first post after my puter screwing up,, I was suppose to sign back in, but didn't,, so when I made my first post, it showed it without my user name, [ now probably to be Dirty stinkin DEAD RAT] and showed it to be posted as Anonymous, I noticed that and came back and signed in and it gave me my name back.
All was kool,, BUT!! the person that posted the original scolding , about needing a license to be a tile setter WAS NOT ME,,, but the ones since then were ,,, nana.gif  BUSTED cry  I figured Poncho would have checked the ISP, and RATTED me off And  C.O .,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, Buddy It would take a hell of a lot more than that, to piss me off,, I love a good joke, and get carried away sometimes, you would make a good detective, headbang.gif

The burning the houses down was a mistake,, I forgot about your ordeal,, sorry bout that,, biggrin

rofl.gifThat was an excellent gag! I only wish that the whole thing had been you 'cause the "real" License Guy must be a tool. I actually took no issue with the burnin' thing pal...honestly. And it was what made me doubt my suspicions of it bein' you. Good one.
I thought that I could smell a Rat. aww Good prank buddy. rofl.gif
