Yes, I make house calls

Well, as some of you know, I have been helping my two sons with some sheetrocking on their new homes and they are all moved in and completed now.

The Wiff's youngest son emailed me the other day asking if we'd come down to Houston and help him on his re-do of an older place in an old part of Houston.  The message said - - -- all the beer, pizza and sheetrock you can handle on me ! so we're outa here early Friday morning for a fun filled weekend in Space City USA - - - damned sure gonna get me some mudbugs and seafood while I'm down there. hungry.gif

Pics on Monday, I hope biggrin

Oh yeah !! no doubt, thats what friendship is all about, I'm always volunteering to help somebody, and most usually return the favor,, I do feel taken advantage of sometimes,, but those advantage taking people find that the quickness to help them out isn't so quick as it once was,, I figure turn about is fair play,, i scratch your back , you scratch mine,,biggrin

That's how it's supposed to work. I gotta admit that I was really shocked and let down by a few. One fella, a family member, I helped him do a total reno on his house. Right from day 1 to completion...every free minute I had went into rebuilding that house. Used my tools, hauled materials, got him deals through my contacts and worked my skinny butt off. I didn't mind, it's what ya do, right? A coupla years later we did a big reno, I called him to help out with a few things and it was real hard for him to find a minute of time for me. evileye I'm kinda ornary and like to fend for myself but when I admit that I need help and ask for it (which isn't often) and get the cold shoulder like that it really chaps my a$$. doh evileye What can ya do though? hmm Most folks like to help out, especially if it's returnin' a favor.

I've been real fortunate throughout my entire life to be blessed with good friends and family - - - - don't know how I would have made it in my younger days without friends helping out and my boys and the Wiff's sons are a God Send.  We have moved twice in the last 5 years and believe you me, they have more than paid for their raising - - LOL

However, there have been times that I was really surprised at a few friends reactions when I asked them for help - - especially the ones that I would drop everything and come a runnin' when they needed help.  Like that old Tracey Lawrence song says "You find out who your friends are !"

Hey, Gang, I'm out the door to Space City USA and a bucket of Mudbugs so Y'all keep Rat and Randy in line while I'm gone - - - - remember you got young Diesel to help ya out know thumbsup.gif

don't put no sissy blisters on those meathooks, biggrin

Most of my oroblems come with people borrowing stuff, and not returning it, or returning it broke,

I let the guy that we built the 36 for , borrow my trailer to take it clear across the state to a car show,, suspose to have it back 3 days later, he kept it for 21/2 weeks, I needed the trailer, myself, and he wouldn't answer his phone,, so I had to rent one,, it showed up parked in the street, a week later , with the fender tore off of it, and 2 ruined tires, where he had run over something in the road,
when I finally got hold of him,, he tells me that his brother had used it last and I should talk to him,, I finally got them to buy new tires,, but only by tricking them into paying me,,
He needed something fixed on the 36, that we had told him we would take care of,, but when he came to pick it up   I had tacked on 200.$ for trailer rental, 350.$ for tires, and 150 $ for a new fender, and 150$ for the rental on the one I had to rent,, and wouldn't give his car back till he paid his bill,

Then he had to balls to ask me if I would store the 36 for the winter , cause he didn't have a place to store it,, you can guess what my reply was,,
This guy owns big fancy hair salon and is very wealthy, but also a Pr87ck,furious

BUMP and UPDATE:
Well, the trip was productive, in that we got everything and more done that the Wiff's son wanted to do.  The Houston traffic is "ALMOST" more than I can deal with anymore but we managed to stay out of everyone's way and get home safely.  The only problem we had was when I went to get the Continental Breakfast Saturday morning and the "bitch" at the desk told me I could not take it back to our roomjawdrop.gif (there is a refigerator and microwave in the room)  I asked her if she was sure about that and she said yes and I dropped two plates of toast, butter, muffins and bananas in the trash in front of her.

OK, enuff of that - - the project this weekend turned out to be framing and siding and NOT DRYWALL - - - HE wanted to get this done (see pics) because he couldn't do it without help so we managed to get way more done than any fo us expected.

As you can see in the first pic - - - there is a sliding glass door and burgler bars along with a small bathroom window on the back of the house (1950's vintage)  but since the neighborhood has CHANGED and there is an apartment complex behind him now, he decided to take out the sliding door and window and replace them with two transoms for light and the rest in 105 siding.

The second pic is what the sliding door ended up looking like on the inside.

The third pic is what the small windwo ended up looking like on the inside.

The fourth pic is what the back of the house looks like NOW !

Tying in new materials and new construction to OLD stuff wasn't that easy but we did "Git'er Done" thumbsup.gif

Yessir Mello! wink You folks were busy...good work too. aww Those transoms are really becoming popular here. When tyin' new in with old the true craftsmen show.

If ya keep that level of workmanship up and that price and you'll be in Houston every weekend buddy. confuse

thank ya, he did offer to double my salary but isn't 2 times nothing still nothing biggrin

all kidding aside - -- when we moved to this house he brought his Mom's stuff up in a big Moving Van and wouldn't let me help unload any of it - - he and a friend unloaded a truck load of furniture and stuff all by themselves and put it where ever we said to put it so this is just returning the favor - - - - same thing with my boys - - - all I or they have to do is ask - - - surprisingly I feel pretty dagone good tonight - - - thumbsup.gif

Yes, he has a Huge corner hot tub/sauna/bath tub that is eventually going into that cormer - - - it should look great when finished.  Hell, that thing's so fancy you might even be able to boil crawfish and shrimp in it rofl.gifbiggrin

He is an archetect by trade and almost everything that he is doing inside that OLD house is very NON-CONVENTIONAL and his own ideas and that really can slow the process down.  So far the livingroom and half of the den/diningroom is all that he has gotten done managed to complete.  Wish I lived closer and coujld hep more.

I'm certainly not a archetect, but I like to do different ideas also,, mosty crap that the wiff has seen on HGTV, sometimes it works most of the time it don't,,

My house has been a ongoing project ever since we moved in here, in 1980, most everything in this house has been remodeled at least twice, some 3 and 4 times,, that bathroom for instance is on its 4th go round,, cry

Now I really wish I was nearer to ya Mello. aww I'd love to get hooked up with an architect who likes custom work. The stuff we could do in that bathroom with 'crete would be so cool.
Speaking of doin' and redoin' stuff around the house I gotta redo our main floor bath...again. disbelief It's my own fault. I had plans/designs/doodles that I did but consulted with my wife anyway. hmm The features that I wanted originally and she vetoed are now "wanted". confuse Uh-huh. Shoulda just went ahead and did 'em right from the start. I honestly think that she does this 'cause she such a pennypincher and to save some labor for me. But it always ends up being redone so it turns out to be more work and money. doh Penny wise and pound foolish huh? Oh well, as soon as I can get our son to commit to the labor we'll do it right. Don't hold yer breath fer pix...this could take a while. wink  hmm

I forgot to mention that we discussed you and your work while taking a break yesterday and he was very familiar with what you do and commented how nice and custom that stuff was.

Ya know...I've been thinkin' about this...you fellas know that this isn't spam or advertising so I'll throw it out there. If any of you folks, or someone ya know, is lookin' for a contractor that does the 'crete thing that I do, or if ya wanna look into gettin' into the biz yerself, or if yer interested in workin' fer someone in the biz....I know contractors all over North America. We don't all do all the very same stuff 'cause we're all independant contractors but there are some things that we all do. This is just meant as an offer of assistance...you guys know that right? "cause some folks get a twisted outta proportion if they think that someone is advertisin'. disbelief
