Gonna semi-retire ol' 72...

Hidy folks! Some may remember me talkin' about this ol' ride on mower of mine. The thing ran as strong as could be last year and impressed me so much that I went to work and painted 'er up all purty. End of the season one of the deck pulleys came apart and the seat still needed to be replaced and it still had no brakes and it still needed a boost to fire up and the blades still go if the thing is runnin'....so it's less than perfect. aww I went lookin' for a replacement pulley. Pffffft! disbelief Good luck! The ol' thing is a 1972 Unival hmm not a lot of parts layin' around for 'em. A supplier would order one in for me at a cost of $90.00 plus 13% tax. Someone mentioned welding the pulley but that makes me a bit uneasy with it rotatin' at a high speed. It is directly connected to a blade.  fear.gif So...uuummm....nope! disbelief  I think that I'll keep the ol' thing for pullin' a wagon around the yard or somethin' and get another one for mowin'. Thing is, the new ones are frickin' ugly as far as I'm concerned...and wimpy lookin'...and overpriced. nod.gif  I need Poncho's deal findin' skills here aww. Found a 1995 John Deere (at a dealer) that looks and runs like new...they're askin' about $900.00. Maybe I'm outta touch, but that seems like a lot to me. I need to look further. confuse

No kidding!!!!! I swear that Harry could slip in a mud puddle and land face first into a smoking deal with enough components to build three of those bad boys.

$900 does sound like a lot.....Of course, it all depends what model it is........and what accessories come with it. I have a JD STX38....I paid $800 for it.....came with a wagon.

I picked up a Ford parts tractor the other night....only the engine is good on it, the rest scrap.......and today, I got a Co-op Turf Trac 10/38..........They say it runs, haven't checked it over yet...........I won't say how much I paid, cus it will just piss you off....LOL

Cool machines! thumbsup.gif

My old rig is a 1972 Unival, built for Home Hardware. It was an 8HP 38" but someone along the way dropped a 12HP B&S into it. It runs really strong.

The John Deere is a 1995 STX38 with not a scratch or mark on it. I even know the old dude who owned it since new. This dealer bought it from his estate 'cause it's in such great shape and he had been a long time customer. Best they'll do is $800.00 and still no attachments thrown into the deal. Any opinions? Anything to look for with this particular machine? Oh yeah...it's got a 13HP Kohler for power. hmm

I think that I'm gonna go for it. New ones start at $1,500.00 and 10HP B&S and look wimpy. I'm no tractor pro, but isn't there something about the gears in the newer ones that makes 'em weak? They're made outta nylon or somethin'? confuse

.STX38....I have the same machine.......Its a good one.....I had to put a starter on mine this spring.....$300......Had to order it from Kohler......The cheapo Chinese ones wouldn't fit.

See, I don't always get everything for nothing.....lol

aww  No, I figured that your knack couldn't be effective for everything Poncho. Too bad huh? Good to know that you've had good luck with the same rig though. I'm gonna go for it. nod.gif Gonna get it tomorrow.

That's the one Poncho! aww

Really Mello? They're pretty much top-o-the heap here. One of my neighbors has a new one an 18HP I think and it cost the best part of $5,000.00. Another neighbor uses one that's older than me that he had since new...still looks and works like new too. Yep JD and Honda are pretty much the tops here. Most folks get the Sears, Canadian Tire or Home Hardware machines though.

Yeah, I kinda figured it was a Coloquial (sp?) thing because I have heard the same as you from other friends in other States than Texas confuse

Paid $1100 for my Murray brand new and when it lays down, I'll buy another one just like it - - - I don't need anything that will outlast me biggrinbiggrinbiggrin

Well, the new (to me) mower arrived.  w00t.gif  Got it delivered for the 8 bills. hmm I cut the front yard with it...works like a new one. Keep in mind that my lawn hasn't been cut this yearomg.gif I found it to be a comfy lil' machine too...I went slow, the front yard took me the best part of an hour and I'm very sore now but it was OK while goin'. It's worth some extra pain to actually accomplish somethin' too. I'll attack the side yard and the back yard tomorrow. I'll likely hafta do it in shifts, but I'll do it. wink

Got the side yard cut...looks so much better now. aww  I'm enjoyin' doin' somethin' too. I swear, my body print is in this couch forever.  disbelief So anyway, I went on over to the back yard to at least start it. Figured that I do the 8' between our hedge and the street first...the boneheads on the snowplows really made a mess this past winter. Dammit they dug up about a 40' X 3' swath outta the fella's yard across the street! disbelief They dumped a lot of big rocks and chunks of asphalt all along that 8' X 100' section between the hedge and street. ohmygod.gifI swerved to avoid one of the chunks and put 2 of my wheels in the little ditch that's there. evileye It's only 8 - 10" deep, but enough to have me stuck mad.gif AND I CAN'T PUSH OR LIFT IT OUT !!!!  frustrated.gif   censored.gif   angered.gif....so I'm takin' a little break until my boy gets home from school. evileye

"OUCH" - - - I mowed out front in the road ditch and around the cattle guard entrance yesterday and had to go REAL SLOW because I had no idea what was there - - - too dry to get stuck in Texas but I did manage to not run over some bad stuff that was there in the ditch from a couple of years.

Don't be pulling and yanking on that mower just wait until the youngin gets home - - I'm sure you already knew that but I had a paternal moment for a sec biggrin

You avoided your obstacle...right on! aww  Ya, I know that I just can't do it (move the mower) so I won't even try. hmm Another hour or so and Josh will be home. We kinda go into a role reversal in these situations...he'll get me outta the ditch and then lecture me about bein' careful and not to overdo it. Heh,heh. He's a good kid but that kinda makes me giggle and I usually say,"Yes Dad." biggrin He just shakes his head at me. aww The break is probably good for me anyway.

My young fella got me outta the ditch and I did a few more laps. The rest will still be there tomorrow when I'm ready. I used to do the whole thing with a regular push mower on a Saturday. Pfffft! How things have changed huh? I still think that a push mower does a better job though.
