Kid's sand box. How big?

Like the title asks, how big is too big?  With my wife working for a day care (and me being known by multiple "parent friends" as a fix-it-make-it guy), I was asked to build a sand box.  Nothing too big or too expensive, was all I was told-- I'm thinking less than $15-$20 minus the sand.  No sanding needed, I just have to use treated and they'll stain it if they want to.  I was thinking about just making a 3 foot square box of 2 by 6's and some treated 1/2" plywood, but I'm not sure if it will hold up.  3/4" plywood is better, but it also runs more $$$$ than 1/2".  Got thoughts?

I know that this cancels out the "build it" factor but we found the small plastic wadin' pools to be ideal for that. aww  That gives you an idea for size too I suppose. It really depends on how many kids will be usin' it. confuse

I would use 1"x6" cedar fence planks (the ones with the dogeared tops) Just cut of the dogeared part (couple of inches) and build it 2 boards high.  It is very cheap and resist rot pretty well.  I have built many an economical birdhouse and other projects with that stuff.

You do know, of course, that the sand WILL NOT stay in the box unless you put and top on it and keep all the kiddos out winkbiggrinwinkbiggrinw00t.gif

I might want to think about a top (if I do one anyway...), not to keep out the kids, but rather the cats.....

the cover would also be beneficial in deeping unwanted moisture out of the sand thumbsup.gif

call a trucking company and order a small dump truck of sand.    then let the kids at it done.   I did his for my daughter and it work out great.  no more explensive than building a box and no chemicals or wood splinters
