Cracks in plaster


A member on my Shade Tree forum asked this..........Any thoughts?

we have just moved to an older house from the 50's an there are cracks here and there in the regions over my head....one is from the upstairs bathtub over flowing the rest are just from time....is there a good way to fix them cheap?....i can post picks if you need them

That crack from the tub is the one to worry about, as the plaster could come crashing down on you. The water has damaged the bond holding it up. That part of the ceiling should be taken down and fixed properly. Sounds like the other cracks could just be fixed with some joint compound.

I am going to post this one on my Home Handyman forum...We have some drywall guys there that should have some good ideas.

hey jrot,take a pic or two when you can. in most cases if its ben wet alot, like poncho said, you will need to take it down.if its real old and cracked you cant hardly reattach it. it gets real brittle and will proly just crumble up.that plaster can be a pita and expensive to repair. if you have to take it down put sheetrock up in its place.

As far as I',m concerned, these guys are on the money with their comments.  Hopefully you can get some pics up so we can get a better look.  One thing that I might add is that ?sometimes? you can put up drywall or other ceiling materials without taking the old stuff down.  However, the first thiing I would fix is the overflowing tub biggrin
