Should I call for Service ?

Since we have been having high temps in the 40s and lows in the 30s for several days, our heating system cycles pretty often.  It is relatively loud when running but not too bad, however, every now and then when it comes on, it sounds like someone ran into the house with a vehicle.  It doesnt do this every time so my "QUESTION IS" should I call a Service Man/Woman or would I be wasting our time?

Maybe someone has had a similar problem and can point me in the right direction.

TIA,

meller

Is it a forced air ? if so it might be the fan hitting something or its loose on the shaft, thats about the only moving part in the system,,fan motor going bad<<confuse

What it sounds like, Amigo, is the burner lighting after the gas had been on for a few seconds.

Kinda like the old gas stove that you turned the burner on but didn't have the match ready and then when you struck the match - - - - WHOOOOOOOFFFFF - - - - except x1000

I woulds get the furnace serviced....sounds like its not lighting properly.....burner may be dirty....May not have been cleaned in years......Probably would save money and fuel in the long run

I'd call.  It sounds to me like the burner, too.  Probably needs to be cleaned and adjusted.  Our unit in the Sierras would do that from time to time when it was real cold, or the wind was blowing just right; the one in Bakersfield had me worried the first time I heard it light, so I called and got it checked out.  Apparently this is a common thing with "gas packs".

A year or so ago our Whirlpool HW heater would light off with a minor atomic blast - then I found that there was a recall and to go to Lowe's and get the no charge replacement parts. I added a new $50 control valve and the blast was corrected and now starts with a normal poof.

GET THAT FURNACE FIXED!! ashamedashamed

Well this is what I get for waiting on a call from a friend for a recommendation of a service person. Last night it got to making such a noise that I had to shut it off. Of course this stuff doesn't happen during normal working hours and it's now Sunday morning 41 degrees outside 68 degrees inside (so far) and I may be facing some serious weekend service call charge if I can even find anyone today.

Guess I'll start googling and see what shows up locally.

Procrastination is NOT my thing and I'm sure finding that out now.

we've got a small 'lectric heater that we use in the bathroom but it's really not that bad so far this morning - - - - of course Sherry Belle is still in bed under two heavy blankets and a heating pad but once she gets up and starts stirring around it will probably get a little noisy around here

WASN'T HIS FIRST RODEO !!!

Well Gang, I guess you could say that I "gotta flocky" (aka got off lucky) 'cause I googled up a local service company that advertised 24 hours service and were located in the Lake Conroe area.

Left a message - - - - - got a phone call from Kim and after telling her my problem and address she told me that she would find out who was on call today and what their schedule was - - - - about 45 minutes later I heard a truck out front and a big 4x4 Mopar PU was parked in the front and an even bigger dude got out with his doctor's bag - - - - - I said are you the heating dude and he replied yes he was so we went inside and I showed him how it sounded and what it did when I turned it on - - - - - we then went upstairs and thru the door to the attic - - - - - there's no light up there and I asked him if he wanted me to get him a drop light - - - he said NO and then he took out a little flashlight which he held in his mouth, a milwakee cordless drill with some driver attachments and within minutes he had the side cover off and the squirrel cage blower in his lap - - - - he tightened the fan and reinstalled it almost faster than I could watch him do it - - - - - zipped the cover back on and down stairs we went - - - - he said that will be $69.95 (YES I SAID SIXTY NINE DOLLARS AND NINETY FIVE CENTS) - - - - let me go to the truck and fix you a bill - - - - - I wrote the check out and took it to him and told him that it was obvious that this was NOT his first Rodeo and that I couldn't have been more pleased with him and his company and they would get all my business from now on.  It's running quite and heating wonderful - - - - OH and he said it was a HEAT PUMP UNIT and I had no gas going to the furnace.

Don'tcha just love it when things go RIGHT for a change?????

We do have a ?condenser? that sits outside on a slab but it only runs when the AC is going.  I always thought that a heat pump meant that it was all electric - - ac and heat both. When we lived in the Hill Country we had two large window units that they called heat pump units - - - there was no gas needed for the house so I even sold the propane tank.
