Long Ago And Far Away

My Bride has been sorting photos, found this on the dining room table in one pile.  I wasn't always fat, bald, and white haired.  This was winter of '95-'96 in Grass Valley, CA on a cold snowy day.

OK, Mego, do you do the same thing that I do when you look in the mirror and say "WHAT HAPPENED and then after you look at these pictures you say "what ever it was, thank God, it happened!"

LMAO - - - Harry you look like a young John Belushi - - - that pic of me was at Willie Nelson's Fourth of July Picnic around 1978 or 9 - - at Libery Hill Texas. The headliners were Kris n Rita, The Pointer Sisters, David Allen Coe and of course "the redheaded stranger, Willie" - - - we were fortunate to buddy up with some bikers that had the only shade tree in the place and it was damned hot that day - - - wish I had a pic of the porto-cans and the lines in front of them. Lots of ?ladies? running around with nothing on but a smile. Worse part was I had to carry a beer cooler 5 damned miles to the venue - - - hmmmm, maybe that's why the bikers were so friendly

Yeah, I say "what the heck happened " at least once a day, but I'm not too sure I'm glad it did - I sorta preferred being a bit (a lot) less rotund, and more energetic.  I have worn my hair as long as I could reasonably get away with due to work or social constraints for more than fifty years, always pushing the edge of acceptability or practicality.

In contrast, I just got my semi-annual shearing at the barber shop a week ago, and Bobby took it to an extreme, for me, cut six to eight inches off all over; now I am going to have to be patient until it grows back out some.  He told me that I was still a growing boy, though, 'cause I am growing right out through the top of my hair.  It was an amusing day, that one; I had Bella with me that morning, running errands and stuff, and the barber was the last stop before coming home.  She had never been in a barber shop, and when Bobby started on me, she came back and stood in front of the chair and watched me get shorn; she seemed to be almost mesmerized, just stood there an gawked.  When he was done, before he gave me the hand mirror and spun me around, he looked at her and asked what she thought; she gave a thumbs up - sweet little thing.

Just found this. Old codgers, lol. Will post a pic when I get album out next. Recently my kids were asking me about growing up. I told them that I was my schools junior athletic champ in my youth.they didn't believe me. I dug out an old pic of me in my whites under the school flag pole.they just laughed. But it was true. Wouldn't think it now. I've been grazing in a good paddock for about 15 years or so.lol.

Later gator
Russ.
Ps I've done the hard yards, worked 2 jobs at times and done the hours.

That pic was at my first home wife and I bought. I still find it hard to believe we only paid 17,000 for a 3 bedroom home. This was 37 years ago. We sold it for 79,000 about 8 years later and bought where we are now for 99,000. Our place is now worth approx 500,000 possibly up to 550,000 with prices just rising.

I probably haven't had a photo taken of me except a few on vacation in the last 30 or so years - and those old ones in my 20s - 40s mostly disappeared when my ex decided she wanted to explore new avenues of adventure in wine, men and song (not necessarily in that order).

I never did have long hair. When I went into the army in 1962, the 'skilled' barbers at Fort Dix cut it down to a nub and it was kept pretty much that way for about 25 years. Now can only wish there was enough left to cut short again. Strange looking specs - yep, had them and it looks like they have kinda come back after looking at the displays in the optician's office last week.

10-4 on the 'Cancer sticks", Russ, I abandoned a 4 a day habit in '90 and that's why I'm still around to pester everyone.  I am blessed and Life has been much kinder to me and my hair that I have been to "Life" biggrin

Dave, I think that the long hair has a lot to do with "when" you were born and what Era you grew up in.  My lil Bro has never had long hair in his life and he also did a stretch in Nam with the rest of you Heroes of mine.

A quick funny story about aging, if I may?

One day I was shoeing this horse for a client of mine and my youngest son, who worked with me as apprentice, said "Hey did you know that today is Dad's 50th birthday?" - - the Lady looked at me and said "Well, you definitely don't look 50 but you move like you were 90!" nobiggrin  When you've been under that horse for a while and then raise up to go to the anvil or whatever, it sometimes appears that you (I) was in sloooooo motion.

Lol, I know farriers that have worked on my racehores and their backs are all shot. It's a real hard job. I've bred and raced standard breads for years but gave up about 5 years ago. Still have a bet though and go to the races.

Ps I bred a group 1 winner which is not easy to do. I used to study bloodlines. Most go back to American sires. Peter the great very prominent in bloodlines.

All I have to do is go a few miles in any direction and see all the horses I'll ever need to see. We live in a 'horsey' county, Saratoga where they have harness races almost all year then the 6 week flat track season which is going on now. We generally wont even go into Saratoga this time of year with the hordes of tourists - most of which can't drive worth a dam'. Lots of farriers hobbling around the stables - and all the biggie Kentucky and Irish farms have their best here usually including the current Kentucky Derby winner.

As far as long hair - I just didn't like it and was born at the right time. The longest ever was to have a DA with long fuzzy sideburns and that only lasted a few months then went back to a flattop. I did have the fruity looking specs thoughevileye
