My youngest just called and said he was having trouble with his NEW Lowe's hot water heater. He said that when you first turn the hot water on it's hot but then alomost instantly becomes colder (maybe 80 degrees or so) He said it was not throwing any breakers and he's checked all the legs to the heater. He also said that he transported it to the house from Lowe's laying down flat and wonders if that could be the problem. Any of Y'all have any troubling shooting ideas to offer him????

It sounds to me as if the lower heater element is not set right, or perhaps not working at all. Both elements usually run off of the same thermostat, so if the lower one is not working, the upper one will heat the water at the top of the tank to a higher degree than down lower, and when he turns on the tap, he gets that top layer of hot water, then the cooler stuff from lower down in the tank. If the water heater is new, about the only recourse he has, and the one I would take, even though it means double the work, is to return the whole heater to Lowe's and get a replacement unit; don't even try to "fix" it, or it will not be returnable.
