Cold Water Wakeup !

I thought I'd share a little story that my youngest son, Bo, told me yesterday and I hope I can relate it properly.

Last week he installed the hot water heater and a couple of fixtures so they could take a hot bath in the big new tub instead of the tiny shower in the temporary trailer they're in BUT when you would turn the hot water on to take a bath, it would only stay hot for a few seconds.  Bad installation or Hot Water Heater RIGHT? - -  well, he thought so and eventually ended up calling the Manufacturer.  The tech walked him thru the testing with his ohm meter and the "TECH" said that he had a bad unit and it probably needed the elements replaced or get "Lowe's" to give him a new one, which he did.

He installed the new hot water heater and still had the same problem.  Then he called his plumber who came out and did all the ohm testing and after thoroughly examining the system, told him this.

"You have a mixing valve in your water system that will dump cold water into your hot water line UNTIL you INSTALL the fixtures."  I haven't talked to him to see if he's got it fixed but I will soon.   Plumber also only charged him 1/2 a service call ($47) so we'll just close this story with "LUCKY LESSON LEARNED"!

All of this modern "you ain't smart enough to not scald yourself, so we (the gov't) will make laws that will protect you" technology kind of disturbs me.  In a way, it's kind'a handy, and in another way, it's a real pain in the tookus.

I installed a Watts regulator in the traded camper that did the mixing - kinda worked OK vs the original which would boil you like a lobstah if not careful

That's my preference, too.  I can still tell what's hot and what's not, and my experience with those "safety" type mixing valves has left me hot and cold, and many places in between.
