Garage Door Opener

I guess I am in the market for a new opener for my shop. The power outage we had last week seems to have surged and fried the circuit board on my 2 1/2 year old Genie opener. I emailed Genie tech support and they feel it is the board since I cant seem to program it now. They will gladly sell me a new board for $150 or so.....if thats the problem, probably is.

Been looking online at whats best in openers and the Chamberlain brand seems to be highly rated. I have 8ft high doors, so I need an extension. Depending on what type I get, it will be between $300 and $400 or so.

My current unit is a Genie Powermaster 1500, 1hp, screw drive.....I dont care about noise, as the door tracks are noisy as hell anyways....lol

Suggestions on what type (chain, rubber belt or screw type).....What HP motor etc would be appreciated.

Well, I have had one of each at one time or another, and each has it's claimed advantages; but,, in my experience, there is not too much, if any difference in them. The one in this garage is a Chamberlain chain driver; it's a bit noisier than the screw drive Genie at the last place, and much noisier than the belt drive at our house before that. But all of them perform(ed) about the same. I don't know how much the climate there would affect the various forms, like a stiff belt when it is really cold, or thickened grease, and that is the only thing I can think of that might color my selection if I were in your place. The gear box in this Chamberlain we have here failed a year or so ago, and it was an easy fix; just six screws, a change out and chain adjustment, and we were back in business; took the guy about thirty minutes, and less than a hundred bucks.

I had a screw drive, 3/4Hp at the last house with 9' high doors(PO was a contractor and put his truck w/ladders on top inside). They were no problem. We currently have a pair of 1/2Hp chain drive Sears (Chamberlin, I believe) and have only had a single problem in 23 years and that being a stripped gear. Bought a kit and installed it for maybe $25 and an hour's time(there is a thread here somewhere about that project). I believe the screw drive was quieter but it has been a while. The openers that were on the doors when we moved in were also Sears, ~20 years old - one was toast and the other on its way

The more I investigate this, the more it seems it is the circuit board. I am probably going to get one.....about $135 shipped to me. The rest of the unit looks brand new, so cant see the point of buying a whole new one.

Look on Ebay - you might find one a bit less $$ - even in the North Country. My spare set of JIC gears came from there and was about 1/3 the price of the Sears Parts store
